Data Science Intern

Our flagship product, Kandua.com, is South Africa’s largest online home services marketplace: A seamlessly designed platform, that connects great home service providers to the people who need them, powered by pioneering technology and a passionate, talented team.

We are looking for motivated and talented individuals to join our team. The goal of this internship is to fill gaps in our Data team as better prepare you for a future career within Data Science by giving you an opportunity to dig in and get involved at the cutting edge.

As an intern, you will be working closely with a Senior member of the Kandua team, as well as other colleagues who will provide you with real hands-on projects and daily tasks. Interns will be able to apply classroom based knowledge to projects and gain essential workplace skills needed to be career ready. Kandua is dedicated to developing successful leaders, and we strive to make this internship as realistic and informative as possible.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

You will work closely with operations, engineering & design teams, to enable them to orientate around data - because data runs this business.

It will include (non-exhaustively):

  • Analyze & synthesise data on business intelligence dashboards
  • Develop Forecasts and Predictive Models
  • Work together with engineers to instrument, launch, and measure the impact of features
  • Present Findings to Key Decision-Makers

  • A systems approach to thinking, as opposed to a siloed approach. As the candidate, you need to understand how your work affects the greater system
  • The ability to work without supervision, and take accountability for the work you deliver
  • The ability to start with simply a problem statement, and be able to research, develop and deliver a solution or proven hypothesis

Qualifications and Skills

Minimum requirements:

  • You must have some exposure to SQL
  • Your degree should include some Mathematics
  • You must have excellent spoken and typed English

Essential Skills

  • Analytical thinking – successfully examine and assess data from a variety of sources, ranging from competitor pricing data to customer segment profiles and cost data 
  • Maths – this role requires excellent mathematical skills to derive insights from multiple data sources and utilize them to develop models and provide pricing advice to decision-makers 

Desirable Skills

Ideally, you would also have:

  • experience writing code
  • good grades at Mathematics / Statistics / Applied Mathematics, at a university level
  • demonstrable interest in Data Science & Machine Learning
