Job description

Full Stack Engineer Intern, Kandua

  • Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Internship length: 6 months
  • Internship start date: ASAP

Summary

Kandua is a tech startup looking for eager interns to support our growing business needs for 2021.

Kandua builds easy tools that empower people professionally. Tools that shorten the distance between having a skill and making a living from it. Our flagship product, Kandua.com, is South Africa’s largest online home services marketplace: A seamlessly designed platform, that connects great home service providers to the people who need them, powered by pioneering technology and a passionate, talented team.

The goal of this internship is to fill the gaps in our rapidly expanding tech team, and to also better prepare you for a future career as a Full Stack Engineer, by giving you an opportunity to dig in and get involved at the cutting edge.

Given the scale of our impact & engineering’s centrality to it - we're a smaller engineering team than most would guess. We won this leverage through devotion to the game of optimizing each other and our code. We relish the difficulty & the stakes, and our next hire should too. As such - we tend to hire engineers with track records demonstrating obvious excellence at their craft. We're open minded about what excellence could look like in different contexts. For example, an interesting candidate may be a top-of-the-class CS degree graduate who's become a community thought leader. Or a self-learner, with a star-struck github project. Or an early joiner of a massively successful startup.

As an intern, you will be working closely with a Senior member of the Kandua team, as well as  other colleagues who will provide you with real hands-on projects and daily tasks. Interns will be able to apply classroom based knowledge to projects and gain essential workplace skills needed to be career ready. Kandua  is dedicated to developing successful leaders, and we strive to make this internship as realistic and informative as possible.

 Job Duties and Responsibilities

Not only would you carve across all facets of our system (front, back, and infrastructure), but your objective would always be to solve an actual problem. This means we're probably not a great fit for those who prefer to constrain their engagement to the implementation-level.

We promise you a supply of nuanced problems that you can own and solve, end-to-end:

  • Work with our product manager, designer, and engineering lead to devise an elegant approach
  • Implement this approach - moving nimbly across our infrastructure (google cloud), our databases (mainly postgreSQL), our backend (in node.js, and our front end (in react.js)
  • Demo your solution to the team
  • Track and monitor the performance & reception of your solution with our users

Key Competencies

You’d likely be a great fit, if you are:

  •  Are made uneasy by mediocrity; you're better than most - but that's not good enough
  • Want to build something that has meaningful impact on society
  • Crave a challenge
  • Take yourself lightly, but your craft seriously
  •  Are an independent thinker, who cares most about winning as a codependent team
  • Passion for building the highest-quality software that delights the user
  •  Flexibility to move quickly with a startup

Qualifications and Skills

Minimum requirements

You should:

  • Be either studying a Computer Science related degree, or an obsessive programming hobbyist
  • Have at least some exposure to the JavaScript language
