Role Overview: The Accountant/Finance Officer will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities related to the Lake Turkana-Kakuma Fish Value Chain project and other company operations. This includes managing accounts payable and receivable, budgeting, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The role will be based in Turkana and will require strong financial management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, and petty cash management.
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, ledgers, and journals in accordance with established accounting principles and standards.
- Assist in the development and monitoring of project budgets, forecasts, and financial plans to ensure effective resource allocation and cost control.
- Conduct regular reconciliations of bank statements, vendor accounts, and other financial transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management review, highlighting key financial performance indicators, variances, and trends.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements, tax returns, and regulatory filings in compliance with local laws and regulations.
- Coordinate with external auditors and regulatory authorities as needed to facilitate audits, reviews, and compliance assessments.
- Provide financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to support decision-making, risk management, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.
- Support procurement processes, including vendor selection, contract negotiation, and purchase order management, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of financial information and uphold ethical standards in all financial activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Professional certification such as CPA (K) or ACCA is preferred.
- Proven experience in accounting and finance roles, preferably in project accounting or financial management.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Experience working in the NGO or development sector is an advantage.
- Familiarity with the fish value chain or agricultural projects is desirable.
