1721 1156 Shortlist

In this instalment of Shortlister Spotlights (a Q&A series to get to know some of our team members) meet Delice Mascarenhas, Talent Consultant from our Mumbai office!

At Shortlist, we love building our team almost as much as we love building yours!

We have some pretty amazing people across our three offices who have a real passion for what they do and for the Shortlist mission.

Read to know more about Delice’s Shortlist journey.

Tell us about your life at Shortlist.

My life at Shortlist began on April 1st, 2019! Yes, on April Fool’s Day. I remember my friends asking me if I was sure Shortlist would not ask me to go back home and say all this was a prank! 😜

I had come across the opening on LinkedIn by sheer chance and the only reason I initially completed the application was because I loved the interactive application process. I did not really know what I was applying for, but organizational psychology intrigues me and I knew the role would provide me with exposure to different organizations. As I went through the interview rounds, I saw that the interviews were engaging and the team reviewing my application was very proactive, responsive and supportive. I knew I wanted to be part of a team like that. I was thrilled to join as a Talent Analyst. But, like many people in their first job, I was unsure if I would be able to do it. All I knew was that I was going to work at a startup that had competent people, an interesting product, a job role that was client-facing and very focused on human interaction.

So, now, nearly two years later, I am still here and loving it. I got promoted recently to be a Talent Consultant because I did well in my first year for my clients and candidates. I enjoy the autonomy I have in my job, the interactions with candidates and clients, and the amazing learning curve I have. I feel this is the best place to kickstart one’s career. Every day is a new day because I interact with so many people and learn about their career journeys. I get to work on so many different roles and I now know what the world of work has to offer. I used to be a technologically challenged person 🙈, but here I am working in a tech startup and absolutely loving it.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was unsure about what I wanted to become, but one thing I knew for sure – I wanted to do something with people. I have always thrived on social interactions. For the longest time, I wanted to be a child psychologist.

What is your professional background, and what were you looking for in your next career step when you found Shortlist?

I completed my BA in psychology from Sophia College, Mumbai. I did not want to take an immediate plunge and do my Master’s, I wanted to work and get some real-world experience. Shortlist is the best and the perfect place I could ask for to start my career. As a Talent Consultant, I get to work with different sectors and industries and with experts. It has opened my eyes to what opportunities the world has to offer.

How has your current role impacted you?

My current role as a Talent Consultant has taught me how important it is to love your job. It has taught me the importance of waking up on a Monday morning with a smile on my face.
Shortlist has taught me to look beyond what is there on paper…on the CV and actually look at a person’s capabilities. I have learnt the importance of cultivating a strong network and the tricks of managing clients and expectations.

Tell us about a candidate that inspired you.

Every candidate has a story to share about their career, the best part about my job is listening to these candidate stories. My favourite would be Anushree Kanchan who I hired for the HR Head role with Educate Girls. She came across as someone who was a strong culture fit and after I spoke to her, I knew she was the one. She was resuming after a small break from her work life, but I could see the passion she was coming with and this break that she took just seemed insignificant in comparison.
I also worked on building the senior team of different NGOs and have been part of helping a university in India by hiring for their leadership team. There are so many stories and so many journeys to learn from.

What’s your professional superpower?

I can make anyone comfortable: I am great with people, which puts my candidates and clients alike at ease.

What’s your favourite Shortlist memory?

I think my favourite Shortlist memory would be when I rang 7 bells (indicating 7 job closures) together and kickstarted 2020! It was truly a proud and happy moment for me! 😊

What are three words or phrases you would use to describe Team Shortlist?

Competent, enthusiastic and extremely hardworking people who are passionate about the work they do!

What is your favourite Shortlist value and why? Learn more about our values here!

My favourite value is hands down – ‘Be a whole person!’ Shortlist gives me the opportunity to be true to myself. The work-life balance I have here gives me the opportunity to pursue things that define me apart from work!

Talent consultant

What do you like to do outside of work?

I host events on weekends and volunteer with an NGO called ‘Make A Difference’! I have been doing this for a while – 3 years hosting and 7 years volunteering! Both of these truly make me happy and during the lockdown, I am trying to find ways to do them virtually! I also love travelling and trying out new cuisines.

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

I am currently reading Shoe Dog by Phil Knight and watching Shark Tank!
I feel like I am building the entrepreneur in me.

Why is the Shortlist mission important to you?

It is important because my motto in life is to #SpreadHappiness whether it is through hosting, volunteering or through my full-time job. With Shortlist, I spread that happiness by connecting people to their dream jobs and employers to the right employees to help grow their organizations!
There is nothing better than getting a text from a candidate I have placed, who says, “Thank you Delice, I absolutely love my job.”

How is Shortlist different from other companies?

Shortlist is different because we put people before profits. Shortlist is different because we know how to have fun while getting work done. It is also different because we find the adventure at work and pull each other up to do better!

Talent consultant

We like to give (virtual) high fives to recognize our team members when they do something awesome. Now is your chance to make a public high five to a fellow Shortlister:

My Project Manager and Operations Director- Shriya. She is a definition of a brilliant leader and she knows how to motivate her team and bring out the best in them!

All my Operations team colleagues – you guys have always been just a call away for anything (work or non-work related) and I am proud to call you all my friends!

The Leadership team at Shortlist – for identifying my strengths and pushing me to use them better, for helping me to find the adventure by doing all that I love doing!

Any final words:

Everyone should start their career working for a company like Shortlist where you get opportunities to learn, grow and celebrate wins (big or small). I owe it to Shortlist because it has given me a chance to explore the world of work by working here!

Shortlister Spotlight: Meet Shivani Nair, Talent Consultant

1723 1215 Shortlist

In this instalment of Shortlister Spotlights (a Q&A series to get to know some of our team members) meet Shivani Nair, Talent Consultant from our Mumbai office!

At Shortlist, we love building our team almost as much as we love building yours!

We have some pretty amazing people across our three offices who have a real passion for what they do and for the Shortlist mission.

Read to know more about Shivani’s Shortlist journey.

Tell us about your life at Shortlist.

I joined Shortlist as a Talent Consultant less than a year ago. My life at Shortlist is filled with a lot of exciting and diverse projects. Exploring the unknown and learning something new every day is a must-have for my ideal job profile and my work as a Talent Consultant at Shortlist is exactly that.

I never know what the next consult will bring, whether I’ll be diving into researching taxation to find someone their perfect Finance Controller or Business analyst or exploring luxury goods website designs to looking for a Head of Marketing or my personal favorite, helping non-profits find the most passionate people to fulfill their program needs.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was little I wanted to be a lawyer because I mistakenly thought that being an advocate meant you could talk as much as you wanted and everyone had to listen to you. 😛This was reinforced by my love of debating and in general articulating my view of the world in a persuasive manner.

What is your professional background, and what were you looking for in your next career step when you found Shortlist?

My educational background is in finance having done my Bachelors and Masters degrees in accountancy and business. However, I was always passionate about educational equity and reform and have been volunteering with non-profits in the education sector all my adult life.

I joined Teach For India as the recruitment lead for Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. After focusing on extensive stakeholder management, candidate management, and brand building for two years I was looking for an opportunity to explore and learn something new. That’s when Shortlist called and I couldn’t pass on an opportunity to explore talent acquisition in-depth in such diverse industries across the country and the globe.

How has your current role impacted you?

My current role has reignited my passion for learning and exploring diverse viewpoints as each role brings with it a different industry to research, a different skillset to explore and a different talent pool to understand.
Each client also introduces me to a different work culture and hiring process. Additionally, getting to speak with and understand the thought process of different industry leaders has opened my eyes to how different hiring and talent management processes work and how it’s something that I would actually want to understand a whole lot more.

Tell us about a candidate that inspired you.

My first few roles were mostly with non-profits. Many of the candidates I spoke to were even at the cost of taking a significant pay cut looking to shift into a more impactful role as they wanted to use their skills to add value to the society. That coupled with their humility and the fact that many of my candidates looked for challenging work, not just comfortable positions has been a major and constant source of inspiration for me.

What’s your professional superpower?

Calling it a superpower feels like a stretch, but I think my love for connecting with people and genuine interest in figuring out each person’s story is a huge advantage in a job that is so reliant on building strong client and candidate relations.

What’s your favourite Shortlist memory?

consultant at Shortlist

Midnight cycling adventure with team

Every successful hire.

I love the feeling of being instrumental in changing someone’s life in some way or helping an organization fill a role that was vital to them. The midnight cycling adventure we went on as a team is one of my favorite memories in Mumbai.

What are three words or phrases you would use to describe Team Shortlist?

Fun. Highly motivated. Diverse.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Anything that involves exposure to trees, ocean views, or sunsets, usually involving long walks. Reading novels. Exploring new and foreign cultures through food and cinema often obsessing over their language. Currently obsessed with learning Korean.

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

Currently re-reading one of my favourite authors- Michael Crichton’s Sphere as I’m surrounded by books from my childhood being stuck at my parent’s place during the lockdown.

Why is the Shortlist mission important to you?

Employability is closely connected with educational reform, and both areas are close to my heart. The amount of wasted potential in our country is ridiculous and while a number of factors come into play, a flawed hiring and selection process contributes significantly to it.

The way Shortlist approaches hiring is a much-needed intervention for the recruitment space in India. Though it doesn’t always seem evident or even implementable with 100% of our clients I see Shortlist recruiters try to encourage a more skill-based, unbiased, and empathetic hiring practice on a daily basis. Hopefully one day we will be working much more directly on this vision.

How is Shortlist different from other companies?

I think what truly sets us apart is the combination of expertise and empathy with which we operate with our clients and candidates.

We like to give (virtual) high fives to recognize our team members when they do something awesome. Now is your chance to make a public high five to a fellow Shortlister:

Team Hustlers

High fives to :
• The hustlers – my team! I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to meet, work with, and learn from a team of such distinctly different but identically awesome people.
• A special shout out to our Leadership team for holding everything together when the world seems to be falling apart and retaining not only all of us but their sense of humor as well.
• Our amazing intern Ronak and our fabulous fellows Ahlam and Vaibhavi. Feels like we wouldn’t last a day without them.

Any final words:

As much as I miss our beautiful office, the ceaseless banter, and Friday drinks, I think right now is probably the gladdest I have been that I am a Shortlister. In times of adversity and isolation, this team and organization has shined through and how!

Thank you, Shivani! We’re so glad to hear your experiences on Team Shortlist.

Shortlister Spotlight: Meet Gunjan Talreja, Talent Consultant

3443 2765 Shortlist

In this instalment of Shortlister Spotlights (a Q&A series to get to know some of our team members) meet Gunjan Talreja, Talent Consultant from our Mumbai office!

At Shortlist, we love building our team almost as much as we love building yours!

We have some pretty amazing people across our three offices who have a real passion for what they do and for the Shortlist mission.

Read to know more about Gunjan’s Shortlist journey.

So, Gunjan. Tell us about your life at Shortlist.

I work as a Talent Consultant with the Operations Team. I work on mid-executive level searches for clients across different industries such as FMCG, Education, Financial Services, etc.

At a given point of time, I usually run about 4-6 search-based roles for our clients. This is always an exciting process as I get to work with new clients across different industries and sometimes even different geographies.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

As a child, I always envisioned myself in the role of a nurse. 👩‍⚕‍ I loved helping people and caring for them. However, each year my “career choices” would keep changing and I would be comfortable with allowing that to happen. I have always been ‘multi-passionate’ and hence the changing nature.

What is your professional background, and what were you looking for in your next career step when you found Shortlist?

Shortlist is my first full-time role after university. After graduating in Psychology, I was not very sure about what I wanted to do next. I was passionate about the social impact space and wanted to explore it further. I had done quite a few internships and volunteering work with NGOs too. I went for my post graduation in Social Innovation Management, did a fellowship with Ashoka, met with a lot of social entrepreneurs, and learnt about their visions. After my fellowship, while I was figuring out ‘what next’ I met Mehndi Shivdasani who is a Team Lead at Shortlist and got to learn about her work and what Shortlist does.
Recruitment was not a field I had initially planned working in. But after learning more about Shortlist, I realised that I was always interested in “unlocking human potential” be it through my interest in psychology, yoga, or meditation. And looking at Shortlist’s mission “unlocking professional potential” made me realize this was nothing but a perfect alignment! I decided to take a leap of faith and joined Shortlist as a Talent analyst.

How has your current role impacted you?

My current role as a Talent Consultant has impacted me – personally and professionally. I speak with individuals from different sectors, each interaction gives me an opportunity to grow. In my role, I build relationships with founders and CEOs who are extremely driven and passionate about the work that they do. Understanding human nature has always been a core passion, and this role allows me to do that in a multitude of ways. It has been a great learning curve that never stops, grows with each new role, company, and industry. Personally, it leaves me fulfilled knowing that I get a chance to work with leaders who are creating massive impact out there.

Tell us about a candidate that inspired you.

This is tricky as I can think of so many candidates. But if I had to think of one, it had to be a candidate who I was interviewing for a role in an education-based NGO. He was extremely passionate about working with children and empowering them to become leaders in their lives. This passion drove him every single day in his long career. Our call went on for about 40 minutes as we kept digging deeper into his work and understanding his personal as well as professional journey with each role that he held. That intricacy which included a mix between the two, made me understand how deeply connected our individual passions are to our careers.

What’s your professional superpower?

Keeping an open mind. I am always open to new ideas, thoughts and allow myself to think beyond what something actually looks like. This allows me to come up with creative questions and ideas to challenge existing notions. 💡

What’s your favourite Shortlist memory?

My favourite Shortlist memory is hands down the April 2019 retreat in Lonavala. It was so memorable interacting with members of our tech team, which is based in Hyderabad. We had lots of discussions on tech vs ops and all had a great time getting to know one another! 😎

What are three words or phrases you would use to describe Team Shortlist?

• Hustle + Heart ❤️
• #OneTeam
• Ambitious and driven both in their personal and professional lives

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work I love listening to podcasts, reading, doing some yoga 🧘 or breathwork. I like to catch up with friends and family on weekends.
I also like participating in online workshops and interacting with new people.

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

• Reading: ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill and ‘A New Earth’ by Eckhart Tolle
• Watching: Just finished ‘Sweet Magnolias’ on Netflix
• Listening to: ‘The Lime Tree’ by Trevor Hall

Why is the Shortlist mission important to you?

I resonate with the Shortlist mission on a very personal level. I truly believe that we all have infinite potential within ourselves and it just requires either us or someone else to see it. At Shortlist, we help candidates navigate the confusing spectrum of applying for a job and looking beyond their credentials. It is like being a best friend who can see beyond the surface level when interacting with you. This allows us to truly help companies find people who won’t just have the necessary skills but also bring in traits and characteristics that would allow them to excel in the company. It is a perfect synchronous match between a candidate and the company.
At Shortlist, we also help candidates understand themselves through introspection by using tools like Career Success and Deeper Signals on our platform. This is especially useful for individuals just starting their career.

How is Shortlist different from other companies?

At Shortlist, everyone is encouraged to bring their whole selves at work and express their thoughts openly. This brings in a diversity of thought, which allows us to constantly learn from each other. The leadership team is always known to bring in an element of fun during team meetings and this helps in encouraging a great team culture.
We value our candidates and clients alike, and you can always see us trying our best to provide most value that we can.
People are also encouraged to put on an “intrapreneurial hat” from time to time as the team brainstorms on ideas affecting the whole company.

We like to give (virtual) high fives to recognize our team members when they do something awesome. Now is your chance to make a public high five to a fellow Shortlister:

To be honest, a huge high-five to everyone single person at Shortlist. 🙌 We have seamlessly gotten through an unprecedented time during the pandemic and have fostered team spirit! #OneTeam

Any final words:

I would just say that my journey at Shortlist has been great so far, both personally as well as professionally.

Thank you, Gunjan! We’re so glad to hear your experiences on Team Shortlist.

Shortlister Spotlight: Meet Ganesh Gavankar, Global Finance Manager

414 407 Shortlist

In this instalment of Shortlister Spotlights (a Q&A series to get to know some of our team members) meet Ganesh Gavankar, Global Finance Manager from our Mumbai office!

At Shortlist, we love building our team almost as much as we love building yours!

We have some pretty amazing people across our three offices who have a real passion for what they do and for the Shortlist mission.

Read to know more about Ganesh’s Shortlist journey.

Tell us about your life at Shortlist.

To sum it in one sentence- professionally enriching experience with desired work-life balance!
At Shortlist, I formulate and implement finance process improvements, and manage cash flows. I take care of internal and external financial reporting, taxation, and other finance-related matters.
I enjoy the experience of working at a startup like Shortlist. Honestly, I wish other organizations could also learn from this great culture that Shortlist has.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was always inclined towards drawing and painting. As a kid, I used to spend most of my time painting mountains and sunsets. But pretty soon I realized that I wasn’t even close to becoming MF Hussain.😜 I sold my first hand-made drawings when I was in 6th standard and realized how important understanding commerce is!
I became a thorough convert to the field of commerce ever since.

What is your professional background, and what were you looking for in your next career step when you found Shortlist?

I had worked on a significant number of assignments that mostly involved the audit of finance processes, preparation and presentation of financial statements, analytical reviews, valuations of securities, BvA analysis, etc.
THE missing piece was – I was working on passive data rather than on active or existing data. The next professional step was to work on active data and take corrective actions at the right time. The role of Finance Manager at Shortlist provided me the right opportunity for me to do that.

How has your current role impacted you?

One of the biggest learnings for me was to understand the existence of cost-effective software or platforms that help small businesses scale up their operations at a favorable cost to benefits ratio.
I am thrilled that our Shortlist hiring platform is definitely one such amazing product!

What’s your professional superpower?

I don’t know if it’s a superpower or not, but according to me ‘Integrity’ plays a pivotal role in the function that deals with significant stakeholders like employees, vendors, investors, government departments, etc.

What’s your favourite Shortlist memory?

Undoubtedly, it is from our last team outing in Lonavla. I bowled out Paul (our co-founder and CEO), hitting the middle stump. Bowling him out was important because he is a dangerous batsman in cricket who has baseball experience! He had single-handedly demolished the previous team that he played with, by hitting some crazy sixes!

Finance manager Ganesh at Shortlist retreat

What are three words or phrases you would use to describe Team Shortlist?

Dedicated, Young, Next Generation.

What’s your favourite Shortlist value and why? (Learn more about our values here!)

“Own it” – I have always been that person that if I notice a problem, I try to fix it. This value resonates deeply with me.

Why is the Shortlist mission important to you?

I find our mission vital because it promotes a culture of the objective selection of candidates and wants to do away with a bias-prone hiring system.

So Ganesh, what do you like to do outside of work?

Two things without a doubt- whenever I get a chance, do something adventurous that gets my adrenaline pumping (paragliding, camel riding and a lot more) and spending time with family.

Finance manager Ganesh at Shortlist party

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

Currently, I am tracking the development of the COVID-19 situation and its impact. That is at the top of my list for the moment.

We like to give (virtual) high fives to recognize our team members when they do something awesome. Now is your chance to make a public high five to a fellow Shortlister:

Hanifa, Naomi and Catherine – thanks for all your support whenever I needed it. You guys are a superb team to work with.

Aratrika Dev, Manager- Human Resources

Shortlister Spotlight: Meet Aratrika Dev, Manager Human Resources

537 556 Shortlist

In this instalment of Shortlister Spotlights (a Q&A series to get to know some of our team members) meet Aratrika Dev, Manager- Human Resources from Mumbai office!

At Shortlist, we love building our team almost as much as we love building yours!

We have some pretty amazing people across our three offices who have a real passion for what they do and for the Shortlist mission.

Read to know more about Aratrika’s Shortlist journey.

Tell us about your life at Shortlist.

Life at Shortlist is super fun and exciting. As a Manager, Human Resources, I take care of all the amazing people working at Shortlist.

I make sure they have all the resources they need to be productive, celebrate their talent and achievements, add new experiences to their daily work life through team events, and facilitate high performance through a happy work environment!

I’m the first HR personnel to be recruited at Shortlist. So I take my job and responsibilities extra seriously to make sure I’m setting the right example and trend for the Human Resources team as it grows slowly.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

The first memory I have of wanting to become something was when I was about three years old. Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe, and that is exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up 😀 Later, I moved on to having a rock band and becoming a rockstar!

But I always had a keen sense of business – I would travel with my parents every winter vacation, buy clothes, artifacts and sell them back in my hometown. I made cards, wrote poems, and baked cakes for a small price, combo discount if you wanted all three! So finally, I decided I’m an entrepreneur and will run my own business one day 🙂

What is your professional background, and what were you looking for in your next career step when you found Shortlist?

I have worked at other startups before. Shortlist is the third startup I am working at. I like the thrill of creating processes, structures, policies – bringing order from chaos. But I also need my creative space. To be able to discuss ideas, research best practices, and customize it to our setting, implement new thoughts and perspectives.

This is very difficult to do because, as a Human Resources Manager in a startup, you are closely working with the founder’s office and, more often than not, end up becoming a mouthpiece of the founder’s unchallenged ideas and perspectives. So I was looking and praying to come across an organization that has a culture of welcoming new ideas, experiments, thoughts and that wants to build a healthy workplace where its employees look forward to going to every morning!

How has your current role impacted you?

I have learned a lot in my current role. I can safely say that my interior designing and event management skills got a real boost through my office remodeling and staff retreat planning projects last year! Jokes apart, I have gained so much exposure to diverse teams, people, demography, ideas, and projects. I set up the performance management framework here, which I have always been interested in. I have learned so much from my manager on handling people, balancing between empathy and being just, breaking big projects down into actionable steps, and so much more.

This role has pushed me to be more creative and adaptive!

What’s your professional superpower?

Getting along with people from diverse backgrounds!

Enjoying an outing with the team

What’s your favourite Shortlist memory?

When I was “Honey” Roasted at the India Staff Retreat, 2019 – that was a good day 🙂

What are three words or phrases you would use to describe Team Shortlist?

Innovative, Encouraging, and full of Swag!😎

Innovative Shortlist team full of swag

What’s your favourite Shortlist value and why? (Learn more about our values here!)

“Own It” – if each one of us does what we are supposed to with the aim of the best results, the world will become hassle-free!

Why is the Shortlist mission important to you?

Companies invest in people – as people make and execute winning strategies for the company. It would be a disaster if they were to invest in the wrong people.

People spend 70% of their time at work. Imagine the plight if they were working in a role that did not use their potential nor gave them the platform for development.

Shortlist is trying to enhance the recruitment landscape through technology and new concepts like the Marketplace+Shortlist Connect, which creates a bridge, filling the current gaps and creating a new way – that’s a hell of a mission!

So Aratrika, what do you like to do outside of work?

I like to paint, cook once in a while, travel often, explore new & old food joints and make playlists!

Having fun paragliding on vacation

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

Watching – Restaurants on the Edge, The English Game

Reading – The Woman in the Window, The Egyptian spy who saved Israel

Listening – Serhat Durmus, FKJ, Isaac Chambers & Dub Princess

We like to give (virtual) high fives to recognize our team members when they do something awesome. Now is your chance to make a public high five to a fellow Shortlister:

Hi5 to my manager, Mridvika, for leading by example!

Any final words?

“To win the marketplace, you must first win the workplace!” – Douglas Conant
